Mandatory Rest & Recovery after 26.2

October 15, 2012 by Lisa Run Fast Mama!

Well, they say for each mile you run you should rest that number of days.  This would apply to whatever event was “Big” for you – so, do your first 5K, take 3 days off.  Technically I should be resting 26.2 days… Yea, um no.  I had a half marathon planned for this weekend – key word was had.

Here is a quick refresher for those who are new and have no clue what I am talking about.

So, there was no rest planned on the schedule for me.  If I didn’t sprain my foot around mile 22/23 of Chicago Marathon, maybe a few days at most.  I am scheduled to run the Detroit Half Marathon this weekend, but not gonna happen.  This gorgeous medal will not be on my medal hanger.

I so wanted this one! My dad has a GORGEOUS one, well, technically, it is Baby Girl’s since she claimed it.  None the less, I love corvettes and I digress.

Last week I went to a small town foot doctor after the sprain.  Didn’t look to good Monday morning after the marathon. Notice the big poofy area on the right foot.

Local, small town foot doctor could get me in.  The awesome sports doctor by my work, couldn’t see me till Friday.  I ended up with a “sprain” diagnosis and was sent home in a soft cast with instructions to remove by Saturday or earlier if it was annoying me.

Friday my foot felt AMAZING!  So, I took of the cast before I went to bed as it was annoying me and pinching.  Woke up Saturday, and felt great.  Cleaned the house like any hyper active Mama on coffee would, and OMG!! Pain!!! Actually tried to go to a “Medical” store to buy stuff to remake my cast, lol.  I hobbled around the best I could this past weekend and actually used crutches at Lego expo.

This morning my foot just HURT! Now, mainly due to my allergies, I don’t take any pain medicine and havent in almost 2 years.  I probably have a pretty high pain tolerance, but my foot just needed to be protected again.   Decided to call the sports doctor I originally wanted to go to last week, and they had an opening for 1:30 this afternoon.

Got re x-rayed – this time digital ones.  No stress fracture was visible.  He noted that my foot was clearly swollen and fluid filled on the top and diagnosed me with tendonitis as a result of the sprain.  I need to wear this for an entire week:

Ohh, it feels so good!  I can walk and it just inflates so nicely to protect my foot from any movements to let it heal!  He directed me to even sleep in it.  Perhaps it would be best to wrap in at least an old pillow case because we are not the shoe wearing in the house types around here and I don’t want to even think of the germs on the bottom of this before I disinfected it when I got home.  Wow, run on sentence!

So, mandatory rest.  Yes, I really wanted to do the Detroit Free Press Half Marathon, but it is not in the cards.  Someone once told me, you need to pick your goal races.  My goal is the WDW Goofy Challenge and I need to do what I can to get better to train.  My base is already built from training for Chicago – I could take all of October off and still be ready in time for Goofy.  Priorities and Dreams, it is what it all comes down to.

Now, someone come put away the laundry while I rest and relax, lol.  At least I have a great excuse for Hubby all week! (Disclaimer: Not that one is needed 😉

Sorry you are having to miss the marathon and, thereby, not getting your medal. Rest up.

  2. I’m impressed that you are so chipper about it all! I’m dealing with back to back injuries and its hard staying positive through the process since things ALWAYS seem to take longer than expected to heal. Best of luck for a speedy recovery!

P.S. I’m glad you saw some doctors asap since it could have led to a much worse issue 🙂

Thanks! Nothing much else I can do. It does not put Goofy Challenge at risk so nothing to be upset about. I do really miss running and would so love to be out there on a regular schedule now, but I guess it is not meant to be right now. Need to stop and focus on healing so I can get out there soon again 😃

Thanks for the update, but I’m sorry you can’t tackle the half you had planned–huge bummer. 😦 How long do you have to wear the air cast?
